U.S. Veterans Share Their Experiences With V.A. Services

Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America
Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America is the leading post-9/11 veteran empowerment organization (VEO) with the most diverse and rapidly growing membership in America. Founded in 2004, IAVA’s mission is to improve the lives of Iraq and Afghanistan veterans. IAVA strives to build an empowered generation of veterans who provide sustainable leadership for the country and its communities. IAVA addresses critical issues facing new veterans and their families, including mental health injuries, a stretched VA system, inadequate health care for female veterans and GI Bill educational benefits. IAVA also provides valuable resources and empowers veterans to connect with one another, fostering a strong and lasting community. Through assistance, awareness and advocacy, IAVA strives to create a country which honors and supports veterans of all generations.

About this Tool
IAVA’s “The Wait We Carry” tool is designed to allow veterans to tell their disability claims and VA healthcare stories. We ask veterans and veteran family members to fill out a brief, but comprehensive, survey. In it they describe their experience with VA disability claims and/or experience seeking health care through the VA.

Our tool is designed to show that, behind every piece of data, is a person. We hope that data presented in such a way will encourage reporters and the public at large to look deeper into this issue and shed light on areas the VA is succeeding and areas it can improve. If you’d like to have your story added to the tool click here.

IAVA partnered with Periscopic, an industry-leading information visualization firm, to create this interactive tool. This site was funded with a generous grant from the Knight Foundation.
