Being on the outskirts of Military City USA landed the community of Schertz near the top of a list of best cities for retired military veterans.
NerdWallet, a company that provides online consumer-friendly financial information, looked at the best U.S. cities for veterans based on economic opportunity and community support. The cities were ranked based on 2013 unemployment rates for veterans based on U.S. Census data, the median income for veterans in those cities and the percentage of veterans living below the poverty line.
Schertz, which is located northeast of San Antonio near Randolph Air Force Base, ranked fifth on the list. Veterans, who make up about 22 percent of Schertz’s population, have access to services such as the Guadalupe County Veterans Service offices and Workforce Solutions Alamo. The Audie L. Murphy Memorial Hospital is also nearby in San Antonio.
Randolph is part of Join Base San Antonio which also includes Lackland Air Force Base, Fort Sam Houston and Camp Bullis.
