More than two dozen employers will be seeking to fill entry-level positions next month during a job fair for military personnel and their spouses.
Called “Kick Start Your Career,” the June 22 event sponsored by Delaware Joining Forces will be focused on helping active National Guard and Reserve members, and transitioning service members, between the ages of 18 and 30.
“There are 5,000 National Guard and Reserve members in the state,” said Christine Kubik of veteran service agency Delaware Joining Forces. “These are citizen soldiers who need jobs when they are not serving.”
Service members from all branches, retired veterans and their spouses also are welcome to attend the event from 9 a.m. to noon at the National Guard & Reserve Center, 250 Airport Road, near New Castle.
After long trailing the civilian population, the unemployment rate for all veterans has been on the decline in recent years.
The national unemployment rate for all veterans was 3.9 percent in April, compared to 4.4 percent for the general civilian labor force, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
But younger veterans – particularly women – face tougher job prospects.
Veterans who have served on active duty since Sept. 11, 2001 had an unemployment rate of 4.1 percent in April. Meanwhile, female veterans who served during that time period had an unemployment rate of 5.1 percent.
“We’ve come a long way by building a great network of employers,” Kubik said. “But we want to sustain that effort with events like this, particularly for younger veterans, whose unemployment rate is still too high.”
In addition to featuring 25 employers, the Delaware Joining Forces job fair will offer workshops every 30 minutes that provide information about career training programs offered by Delaware Technical Community College, Dawn Career Institute, Delaware Skills Center and Public Allies Delaware.
The Wilmington nonprofit Suiting Warriors also will be providing veterans and service members with business attire.
There is no charge to attend the job fair, but photo identification will be needed to gain entry to the National Guard & Reserve Center.
