Calling on Congress to #DefendtheGIBill

March 17,  2016
From Paul Rieckhoff

Yesterday I was honored to join my fellow veteran advocates in testifying before Congress at the joint hearing of the House and Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committees. Speaking on behalf of IAVA’s 425,000 members, I urged Congress to #DefendTheGIBill the nation made to our vets by supporting four key IAVA priorities:image of veterans

1. Continue to Combat Suicide

2. Fully recognize and improve services for women veterans

3. Reform the VA

4. Defend the Post-9/11 GI Bill

You may have heard that the U.S. House of Representatives recently passed a bill that directly puts the Post-9/11 GI Bill in jeopardy. This bill includes a 50% cut in the monthly housing allowance provided to children who will have their parent’s education benefits transferred to them.

Since 2009, more than one million veterans and their families have come to rely upon the Post-9/11 GI Bill. We at IAVA refuse to let Congress use the GI Bill as a piggy bank to fund other programs, and we urge you to join us in fighting back.

Use the hashtag #DefendTheGIBill to let your friends and family know you stand with vets everywhere. Also take a minute to take action by clicking below to tell your lawmaker you oppose any cuts to the Post-9/11 GI Bill.
